Build A Joiner's WorkbenchThis class teaches the design and construction of a traditional joiner's workbench. At the end of a busy week, each student will have built a serious workbench.
A sturdy, flat topped bench capable of firmly holding work in a variety of ways is perhaps the single most important woodworking tool in any shop. In this course PFW covers the theory of workbenches, various designs developed over the years, and a variety of vises and other work-holding hardware. Each student builds a bench to be used for generations. If you love woodworking but have never had the privilege of working on a serious bench, you are in for a treat as you will build your own bench on one of the Studio's traditional woodworking benches built by Alan Turner and Mario Rodriguez.
This class is open to intermediate and advanced amateurs. All students will be required either to demonstrate proficiency and experience in major power tool usage (the table saw, jointer, and planer), including most importantly the safety aspects of such usage, or successfully complete a Saturday or evening workshop in Basic Woodworking Machinery, which focuses on the safe use of major power tools. This foundation course is offered frequently at PFW.
Materials -- The Materials Fee of $750 includes both wood (12/4 hard maple), fasteners, and the Lie-Nielsen large tail vise. Students purchase their own front vise. The length of the bench is 7-1/2 feet (or shorter if a student so determines), and the height is customized by the student. The bench shown at left was built at a finished height of 30" by a student who was 4-11" tall; it was perfect for her.
Tuition: $900, plus materials fee of $750.
