Build A Hearth bench
Instructor: Alan Turner
9:00-4:00pm (day)
Class Size: 10 maximum

In this three-day course, students will build a Hearth Bench. Simple design and straightforward construction characterize this classic piece. Historically, a slab bench was placed at the hearth for sitting in front of a fireplace on a chilly evening; this bench doubles as an occasional table.

This piece is composed of only 5 pieces of wood (plus four wedges) but it's not an easy build. The sturdy, splayed legs feature a 4-way taper. The leg tenons are formed on the drill press with the stock mounted in the vertical plane, using a special drill press jig. The slab seat is chosen for its grain, color, and figure, then carefully planed and sanded. Proper assembly of the parts requires some skillful and challenging joinery.

This is an excellent first piece of furniture for the novice or beginning woodworker. Come and learn how to use your tool purchases to create a piece of living room or den furniture which will last for many years.

Recommended prerequisite: Woodworking Machinery Basics or experience with a table saw.

Tuition: $525, including materials.
