We’re currently modifying the joinery on the Fixins Tray. Instead of the box joint, we will use a pinned rabbet joint. It’s a strong, attractive joint. We’ll have new pictures posted shortly.

We made our version of the serving tray, or as we affectionately call it, the Fixins Tray, with the intent to carry condiments, toppings, and drinks from the kitchen to the patio or deck for grilling and outdoor eating. The Fixins Tray is also handsome enough for more formal dining inside among esteemed company. Of course, the tray can also be used in a number of other ways, including holding your mail or storing your sewing supplies.

This Shaker-inspired serving tray is made with box joints on the table saw instead of dovetails in order to simplify the project. Students will also gain experience edge-gluing the bottom panel, shaping the handle, and using a trim router to soften the tray's edges. Like the Shakers, we made the tray in the photos out of cherry, but we think it also looks sharp in other wood species, like walnut, red oak, and maple, which we may use, depending on availability.

The fundamental techniques learned in this project can be applied to many future furniture pieces. The Fixins Tray class is one of PFW’s Beginner courses, which are aimed at those just getting started in woodworking as well as woodworkers with some experience who want to improve their skills while constructing a particular furniture project.

The Fixins Tray measures approximately 18” long, 11” wide, and 4.5” high.

Cost includes all materials.
