Shellac
Shellac
Techniques and tips for using this versatile, natural finish
Instructor - Craig Stevens
June 24, 2024 6pm - 9pm (1 Monday evening)
This workshop is an introduction to applying shellac as a finish, using the method Craig learned while studying under James Krenov. There are a handful of different ways to apply shellac, and this course focuses solely on applying several very thin coats with a fad in quick succession. It’s a low-tech method that yields a high-quality finish.
A shellac finish has a rich look that brings out the nuance of the wood grain and ranges from satin to glossy in sheen. It’s also an excellent alternative to oil. Applying shellac is very approachable and doesn’t require any expensive specialized equipment. A bag of shellac flakes, a couple of glass jars, alcohol, and a folded-up piece of linen are all you need.
In addition to the application of shellac, we’ll also cover:
the different types of shellac commonly available
the preferred alcohol to cut it with
the proper mixing of shellac
the advantages and disadvantages of shellac
the style and type of furniture best suited for shellac
All materials including a small bag of shellac flakes are included in the class fee.
