Danish Cord Bench for Two
Danish Cord Bench for Two
Instructor - Craig Vandall Stevens
Oct 5-6, Nov 9-10, Dec 7-8, and Dec 14, 2024 9am - 4pm (3 weekends and 1 extra Saturday)
The Danish Cord Bench idea started with a desire to design a project that takes advantage of the wonderful texture of “laced Danish cord”. The strong, versatile cord has been used in some of the most visually wonderful chairs designed by many of the talented Danish chair designers in the 1950s.
Students will hone their joinery and layout skills while creating a bench for two out of sapele or ash. Sapele is a strong African hardwood with a nice reddish brown color, similar to mahogany. Ash is light in color with a prominent grain (as seen in the photos). The project uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery to create a very strong bench. With the joinery completed and the bench assembled, students will weave the seat, creating a strong surface with a wonderful texture that compliments the bench. Combined with the comfort and visual appeal of the woven seat, the bench is a terrific woodworking project as well as a beautiful piece for the home.
This is one of our more challenging project classes, and it would be beneficial if you’ve previously taken a class at PFW that involves traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Please feel free to ask us to help determine if the class is a good fit for you.
The bench measures 43” long x 18.5” deep x 22.5” arm height.
Cost includes all materials. Students provide their own lunch. Select your preferred wood species when filling out the registration form (sapele or ash).
