Solid Wood Bookcase with Drawers

January 9 - February 27, 2025 6pm - 9pm (8 Thursday evenings)
Our Bookcase with Drawers came from the desire to have a solid wood bookcase in our repertoire at PFW. The bookcase is inspired by Mike Pekovich’s bookcase in his book The Why and How of Woodworking. Its slightly smaller size makes for an approachable project that could fit in many different spots around the home.
The bookcase is constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, and the drawers are built with pinned rabbet joinery. There are two adjustable shelves that allow for flexibility in positioning your books. The back is ship-lapped and lives inside a groove, so no metal fasteners are used to keep it in place. As a result, the back is very attractive, and the bookcase can be positioned away from the wall should your room layout call for it.
Alongside learning to safely use machines, students will gain experience using a variety of hand tools, such as layout tools, chisels, and block planes. In addition to demonstrations of the mortise and tenon and pinned rabbet joinery, we will also discuss dealing with wood movement and fitting drawers properly.
Our Bookcase with Drawers class is for intermediate woodworkers. Being solid wood, the bookcase is heavy, so you should feel comfortable lifting and moving heavy workpieces throughout the class.
The bookcase measures approximately 45” tall, 27” wide, and 11” deep. The drawers are approximately 11” wide, 8” deep, and 3.5” high. The bookcase shown is made of red oak with walnut for the drawer pulls.
All materials are included in the course fee.
