Relief Carving Basics
Relief Carving Basics
Instructor - Craig Stevens
March 1 - 2, 2025 9am - 4pm (1 weekend)
※ Some of the example photos show original relief carvings that Craig created for the Ohio Supreme Court Judicial Bench in 2002. The subject design for the workshop will be more fun and likely cuter :) Like the fish!
Our new relief carving class introduces students to the fundamentals of woodcarving while focusing on relief carving techniques.
The workshop will cover the basic ideas of carving wood, choosing wood species that carve well, working with wood grain, and holding the workpiece securely. Special emphasis will be given to making sense of which carving gouges and chisels to purchase, when and how to safely use them, and importantly, how to sharpen and maintain each unique shape.
The carving designs for the workshop will allow students to explore a wide range of techniques and develop useful carving skills while being manageable based on the length of the class.
Choosing carving tools can be overwhelming and our tool list can provide a starting point. PFW has some carving gouges for student use, however, we don’t have full sets. And sharpening and getting familiar with your own tools will be more satisfying.
Cost includes all materials.
