Pencil Box with Sliding Lid
Pencil Box with Sliding Lid
Instructor - Greg Horton
August 14 - 28, 2024 6pm - 9pm (3 Wednesday evenings)
In this three-evening course, students will build an attractive pencil box with a sliding lid. The main compartment can hold several pencils while the adjacent compartment was designed to hold a handheld sharpener and small eraser. Certainly, the box can be used for small and delicate items other than writing utensils.
Students will use the table saw and router table to cut the pencil box’s joinery. Commonly found in casework like boxes, cabinets, and bookshelves, rabbets, dadoes, and grooves are used to build the pencil box. Learning these joints and understanding the machines that make them open up a number of different possibilities in furniture making. We’ll also use the drill press to reinforce the rabbet joint with shop-made dowels.
In addition to the proper use of the table saw and router, students will build safe, efficient woodworking skills while learning how and when it’s best to use rabbets, dadoes, and grooves in their work.
The pencil box measures approximately 10.5” long, 3.75” wide, and 1.75” high. It’s shown in red oak, and possible species used in class include but are not limited to cherry, walnut, and hickory. For pencil enthusiasts who enjoy the finer things in life, this pencil box is designed to fit the longer length of Blackwing pencils.
The course fee includes all materials.
